What does 6-Panel mean?

The termĀ 6-panel refers to the configuration of the sewing pattern for a cap made with six triangular pieces of fabric sewn together (without the brim). This configuration has only one main pattern: the classic configuration.

The Classic configuration

TheĀ classic configuration, orĀ pinwheel configuration, can be used to achieve anyĀ profile desired; low, mid or highĀ­. Typically, 6-panel caps with a low to mid profile are unstructured while caps with a high profile have a buckram and are structured.

Many 6-panel hats use a top button to bind the panels together above the cranium but we sometime see models without it. Below is an example of a custom classic 6-panel snapback cap using this configuration:
